Glaskunst

Stained glass window in the Atrium Glaskunst atelier

Light is an essential part of architecture. Stained glass captures, filters, and directs daylight through colour and texture, redrawing the space in the process. As a crafted architectural element that shifts with the position of the sun, it makes the dialogue between inside and outside tangible.

Atrium Glaskunst was founded in 1990 and specialises in leaded stained glass. Designing unique bespoke windows, restoring historic glass with respect for the original, and creating autonomous work out of the craft form the heart of the family atelier. With particular expertise in historic glass painting, the atelier connects centuries-old techniques with a contemporary formal language.

Techniques as a tool

Our work draws on a broad range of craft techniques. Glass painting fires colour and line into the glass. Sandblasting draws by taking away. Fusing glass introduces a plastic, organic quality, while laminating glass layers creates depth and transparency. Each technique has its own character; together they determine the richness of the final result.

We develop and maintain these skills daily, in part through our restoration work on historic stained-glass windows. What we refine there, we translate into our design commissions.
